Coinbase Analysts Warn of a New Crypto Winter — Altcoin Market Cap Drops 41% Since December 2024

Analysts from the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase have reported early signs that may indicate the beginning of a new phase of crypto winter.

According to their latest market review, growing geopolitical tensions and trade conflicts are fueling pessimism among investors, leading to increased caution across the digital asset market.

Altcoin Market Capitalization Falls to $950 Billion

Analysts express particular concern over the decline in total cryptocurrency market capitalization (excluding Bitcoin), which currently stands at around $950 billion.

This figure represents a 41% drop from the December 2024 peak, when the market value exceeded $1.6 trillion.

According to Coinbase, the contraction is linked to a liquidity outflow from altcoins and declining activity among institutional investors, who are shifting toward more stable assets such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).

Experts note that trading volumes in altcoins have dropped significantly — a possible indication that the market is entering a new corrective phase.

Coinbase analysts suggest that the crypto market could be entering a prolonged correction period, characteristic of the so-called crypto winter, during which most digital assets remain under pressure for several months.

The term “crypto winter” refers to extended periods of decline and reduced trading activity in the cryptocurrency market.

Similar downturns occurred in 2018 and 2022, when Bitcoin and most altcoins lost up to 70–80% of their value after rapid bull runs.

If current trends continue, 2025 could become a year of market consolidation and restructuring, allowing stronger and more sustainable crypto projects to reinforce their positions while weaker ones fade away.
